Ranald Macaulay
Ranald Macaulay was born in South Africa in 1936 from Scottish ancestors who
emigrated in 1903 just after the Boer War. He read Law in Cambridge
(1956-59) and was converted from an atheistic/existentialist position shortly
after his arrival. He then met Francis and Edith Schaeffer in 1958 in Cambridge
and later visited them in L'Abri in Switzerland. He worked with the Schaeffers
for 4 years and married their second daughter, Susan. Shortly afterwards he
studied theology in London and simultaneously became involved in founding a
Presbyterian church-plant in west London.
In 1971 he and Susan were asked to start a L'Abri study-centre in England.
They moved with their three children to the Manor House of a small village
not far from Portsmouth in the south of Hampshire. When Francis Schaeffer died
in 1984, the family moved back to Switzerland for 4 years. During this time,
they inherited two extra children aged 7 & 3: they were guardians and the
children had been orphaned. They finally moved to Cambridge, England, in 1996
-- unsure what they were being called to do there in their retirement. Gradually,
the work of Christian Heritage in the UK unfolded. The focus of Christian Heritage
is its base in the ancient Round Church built in 1130. It is visited
by about 100,000 people annually from all over the world. Ranald is involved
in trying to make this unusual setting significant in terms of the gospel of
Christ. (www.christianheritageuk.org.uk)
